Himachal Road Conditions 2026: NH Status, Monsoon & Winter Reality

It covers the major Himachal highways as of 2026, where the bottlenecks are, and how to plan around the two seasons that actually matter: monsoon and winter. Conditions change - we monitor daily in season - but this is the baseline.

NH3 (Chandigarh to Manali, via Bilaspur and Aut)

The Chandigarh to Manali highway. The most-trafficked hill route in Himachal.

• Chandigarh to Kiratpur to Bilaspur: four-laned, fast, in good condition.

• Bilaspur to Mandi to Aut: mixed four-lane and two-lane. The Aut tunnel has bypassed the worst old stretch.

• Aut to Kullu to Manali: two-lane mountain road along the Beas. Slow but well-maintained.

• Bottleneck: Aut tunnel approaches, Friday evening and Sunday night in peak season. Add 20-30 min.

NH5 (Chandigarh to Shimla, via Kalka and Solan)

The Chandigarh to Shimla road.

• Chandigarh to Kalka: four-lane, fast.

• Kalka to Solan to Shimla: two-lane mountain road for most of the hill section, well-maintained but slow due to continuous climbs and mixed traffic. Average 35-40 km/h.

• Bottleneck: Sunday evening return traffic. Solan to Kalka can crawl for 2 hours.

NH154 (Pathankot to Dalhousie to Dharmashala)

The Chamba/Kangra hill route.

• Pathankot to Dalhousie (via Banikhet): two-lane, scenic, good condition.

• Dalhousie to Khajjiar: narrow, occasional rough patches but passable for sedans in dry weather.

• Dharmashala to Mcleodganj: steep and narrow in the upper section. SUV preferred for Bhagsu/Dharmakot drops.

NH44 (Delhi to Chandigarh, the approach)

Not in Himachal but the approach everyone uses. Four-lane, fast, but:

• Karnal: the dhaba cluster slows traffic around lunch.

• Delhi border: the Ghazipur/eastern peripheral can be slow at peak hours.

• Winter fog: December to January, dense fog between Ambala and Panipat. Visibility can drop to 20 m.

Monsoon (July to mid September)

The single most disruptive season for Himachal roads. What to expect:

• Landslides: common on the Aut to Kullu stretch, the Kalka to Solan section, and the Dharmashala hills. Usually cleared within hours but can block the road for a half-day.

• Slush and reduced grip: especially on the two-lane sections. Sedans manage; SUVs are safer.

• Reduced visibility: heavy rain and low cloud slow driving significantly.

• Planning: build a 1-day buffer into any monsoon Himachal trip. We monitor road status daily and will suggest earlier/later starts.

Winter (December to February)

• Snow closures: Rohtang Pass closes by mid-December (irrelevant for Manali itself, but blocks the Leh/Keylong route). The Atal Tunnel is the alternative.

• Black ice: early-morning ice on the Aut approaches and Kullu to Manali section. We start later in winter (7 AM instead of 6) to let the sun melt it.

• Upper Shimla, Narkanda, Dalhousie: snow is common. Roads are usually cleared within a day. Carry chains if you're driving yourself; our drivers carry them.

The routes we don't send sedans on

• Spiti (Manali to Spiti or Shimla to Spiti beyond a certain point)

• Char Dham (past Uttarkashi)

• Some upper Tirthan or deeper Kinnaur routes

• After fresh snowfall, anywhere above 2,000 m

For these, an SUV is mandatory. We'll tell you when booking if your route requires it.

Is the Manali road safe in monsoon?

Generally yes, with an experienced driver. The Aut to Kullu stretch can see slides after heavy rain, usually cleared fast. Build a buffer day.

Do you cancel trips for weather?

Rarely for full cancellation, more often we adjust timing or routing. If a route is genuinely unsafe (active slides, road closure), we'll reschedule at no cost.
