The Chandigarh to Amritsar run is a flat, fast Punjab highway drive - 235 km, mostly four-lane NH44. The drive itself is easy. The decisions are around timing, dhabas, and what you want to do once you arrive.
Distance, time, route
Distance: ~235 km. Drive time: 4-4.5 hours. Route: NH44 from Chandigarh/Zirakpur via Rajpura, Khanna, Ludhiana (bypass), Jalandhar (bypass), and into Amritsar via Beas.
Timing
- 6 AM to 7 AM departure: best. Clear Rajpura before truck traffic, breakfast at Khanna by 8, Amritsar by 10:30 - perfect for an 11 AM Golden Temple slot.
- Mid-day: fine. The highway flows. Reach Amritsar mid-afternoon.
- Evening departure: only if you're doing next-day activities. Night driving on NH44 has truck traffic and winter fog.
The dhaba stops
- Khanna (90 km in): the classic. Sukhdev, Pehalwan Dhaba, multiple options. Clean, fast, consistent parathas and chai.
- Rajpura (50 km in): earlier stop, lighter options.
- Phagwara or Jalandhar bypass: if you skipped Khanna, options exist but it's more about getting past than lingering.
- Beas (30 km before Amritsaar): the last major halt. Dera Baba Jaimal Singh area if you have time.
The Wagah Border question
The Attari to Wagah border retreat ceremony is 30 km beyond Amritsar. The ceremony starts at 4:30 PM in summer (5 PM in winter after DST), but you need to be there by 3 PM to get a decent spot. If you're combining Golden Temple + Wagah in one day:
- Leave Chandigarh by 5:30 AM.
- Golden Temple by 10:30 (1 hour visit).
- Lunch in Amritsar.
- Drive to Attari by 2:30-3 PM (30 km, but parking and the walk to the stadium take time).
- Ceremony 4:30-5:30 PM.
- Back to Amritsar by 7 PM.
It's a long day but doable with a single cab - your driver stays with you. Book the round trip, not a one-way.
Golden Temple crowd planning
The Golden Temple is open 24 hours and is stunning at any time, but the experience differs:
- Early morning (5-7 AM): quietest, most spiritual. Palki Sahib ceremony at 5 AM in summer.
- Daytime: crowded but manageable. Langar runs continuously.
- Evening (after 8 PM): beautiful with the lights, still busy but cooling down.
- Weekends and festivals: very crowded. Vaisakhi (April), Gurpurabs - expect massive crowds.
Fares by vehicle tier (one-way)
- Sedan: from ₹3,499.
- SUV: from ₹5,499.
- Tempo Traveller: from ₹8,499.
Round trip with waiting for Wagah + Golden Temple is priced as a day-tour - see cabs in Amritsar or yatra packages.
Airport drop
Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ) is 11 km from the Golden Temple, about 20 minutes. If you're flying out the same day, allow buffer - ATQ security can be slow. We do temple-to-airport drops regularly.
Frequently asked questions
Can we do Golden Temple and Wagah in one day from Chandigarh?
Yes, with a 5:30 AM departure. It's a 14-hour day but very common. Book a round-trip cab so the driver waits.
How long should we plan for the Golden Temple?
1-2 hours for darshan, parikrama, and langar. Add 30 minutes for the queue in peak season.
Is the highway safe at night?
NH44 is busy and well-patrolled, but winter fog (Dec to Jan) can be severe between Ludhiana and Jalandhar. Daytime is preferred.
